   Born in Carcassonne, Joë Bousquet was paralyzed for most of his life because of a severe wound that he suffered in World War I. He led a reclusive existence as a poet and as a thinker enamoured of shadow and silence. At the limits of the physical and supernatural world, nourished by solitude and contemplation, his thought is expressed in a language of transparent purity. He was an associate of such writers as andré gide and of surrealists and the Carcassone group (paul eluard, françois-paul alibert, max ernst, and others). Bousquet has left collections of poetry that are detached fragments of an intimate journal: Traduit du silence (1936), Le Meneur de lune (1946), and La Connaissance du soir (1947), as well as an important Correspondance.
